The Government’s indication it will modify the Centrelink debt recovery program, while a concession of sorts that there are problems, misses the point which is that the program is deeply flawed and must be shut down immediately.
Moreover everyone who has already received a debt letter from Centrelink needs to be advised immediately there will be no further action until a system that actually works is put in place.
Anyone who is repaying debt already, as a result of this program and who disputes that debt, needs to be immediately reimbursed and the onus put back on Centrelink to actually prove that any debt exists. That’s what a decent Government would do.
