My Debt was caused by a mismatch in the dates that I entered in my tax return. As soon as my partner moved in with me and my children I informed centrelink as I didn't want to incur a debt, It was two weeks into July 2013 However a year later when I completed my tax return I must have put the date of the new partner in as the beginning of July 2013 and not the 14/13th when he moved in with me. Two years later I received a letter telling me that I owed the two weeks of family tax benefit for the period from the 30th June to the 14th July 2013.
I had no way of proving when he moved in with me, so I just paid the debt. Also I should have been more accurate on my tax return and have put the 14th july instead of the beginning of July. So this error cost me $512.
I would have preferred to have been given an option to contest this, however I wasn't made aware that I could and when I phoned Centrelink they just told me that I had to pay it.
