TasCOSS chief executive officer Kym Goodes said she had no confidence in a system that had already mistakenly overpaid people.
“We call on the Federal Government to suspend these impending changes immediately,” Ms Goodes said.
“Given the errors and stress caused by the Centrelink ‘debt’ collection notifications sent out just before Christmas, we have no confidence that the system is able to accurately identify those who owe money to the Government,” she said.
She said there was “little sense” in penalising the one in six Tasmanians who struggled to get by on $37 a day by charging them interest on overpayments.
