The debt was laughable. I was sent a letter asking whether my tax return for a two year period was correct and to do nothing if it was. Of course it was but as per the flawed system it averaged my earnings across the period I was unemployed and in a wheelchair with two broken legs. I wasn't worried about the debt because I when I applied for Newstart I met all the requirements and gave correct information. When I called to question the debt I was told it would be easier for me to prove don't owe it because they archive information after one year. It took a while to find pay slips so many years back but I did. At that point I was recieving 2-5 debt collection calls a week. The initial calls were polite but became more and more threatening after six months. The last call I received I was told that "it's not your choice you have to pay because the government says so". I could only laugh but I can understand how these threats might be intimidating. It certainly got my heart rate up.
They haven't handled it have they? I mean imagine if your water, electricity or ambulance cover behaved it this way.
