Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

I am a 30 year old male who has to pay child support for two children and trying to study at university.

It was towards the end of my second semester of my first year at university when I received a letter from Centrelink saying I owed them roughly $1500 (for a debt that I didn't even owe) for receiving Centrelink after losing my job while I was studying at Tafe in 2014. I called Centrelink at least five times to try to find out why I owed money to them and each time I called, the Centrelink staff gave me a different reason. I gave Centrelink all the information they asked for and they still said I owed them the money. It wasn't until I finished my final exams at university that I was able to sort out the problem by going down to the bank and asking for all my bank transaction records for the past seven years.

I was studying my final exams at university when I received this garbage from Centrelink. I must have spent at least two and a half hours on the phone, while I was studying and didn't have time to go into Centrelink to sort this crap out. I tried to appeal the debt and was told that I didn't have enough evidence against the debt.I was told by a Centrelink representative that they would take $60 a fortnight out of my payments instead of a minimum amount, because I didn't update my employment details from over a year ago. The retarded thing is that Centrelink knew that I was studying full time at university for nearly a year at that time. This BS stressed me out really badly, financially I had to pay my family back some money to pay my rent, food and mobile phone credit that I will never get back.

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

This is a disgraceful tactic from the government to try to get as much money as possible from the most needy people in the country. If a business did this to people they would be convicted of fraud and anyone involved would got to jail. My only advice for anyone accused of owing money to Centrelink that you don't owe is to go to the bank and get your financial records from as long ago as you can get from a bank. Somebody should start #Guiltyuntilproveninnocent so that everyone could follow this clear breakdown of the civil process that this democratic country was founded on.
