Appealing Debt?:
Yes but I lost
Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

We filled in paperwork correctly, as a defacto relationship. Centrelink failed to tick the box that said we were in a defacto relationship so were paying my partner single father payments. They admitted our debt was caused by an admin error by Centrelink, yet we still have to pay the money back, because we accepted the money in good faith!

They have taken my partners last 2 years tax returns, we have been paying $20 a week to pay off the debt and now with change in legislation they have put the debt collectors onto us who are threatening to garnish our my bank account and my partners' wages.

I work 1 day a week, my partner works 14hr days, we have kids 50/50 custody, my partner has to pay child support.

This is disgusting.

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

The government should stop giving out money if their systems do not work.

The point of Centrelink is to help those in need, but what it is doing is creating mass financial hardship and in turn causing people extreme mental health issues to the point of taking their own lives.

This needs to stop.

If the Government are at fault, then they need to take responsibility. Cop the debt and perhaps then when it's so bad, systems that actually work may start to be looked at.

If the system of lending money isn't working - stop lending money.

Where is the Government duty of care?
