Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

the debt collection letter states they may take the debt from my tax return, take money from my bank account and stop me from travelling overseas - you better believe I'm stressed. My partner and I are looking to build a home soon and this is the last thing I need to worry about. Financially - I've passed up on some great opportunities as I don't know if I'm going to need the money to pay the debt.

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

This is actually illegal. The legal burden of proof is the obligation of a party in a trial to produce the evidence that will prove the claims they have made against the other party. They are trying to reverse the burden of proof to us?!? This is like me getting a concreter to concrete my driveway - paying him $2k and then 5 years later calling him up saying I overpaid him and unless HE can prove I DIDN'T OVERPAY him then I will deduct the money from his bank account and stop him from leaving the country. Absolute intimidation tactics and a complete disregard for the vulnerable people receiving these letters. They make it seem as though the debt has been evidenced and it has to be paid. So many people I know have paid these debts and been disadvantaged when they don't believe they even owe the debt. Debt collection company they use harrass and intimidate. Centrelink is so obstuctive in that their staff are rarely in a position to help or give incorrect advice. They inadequately explain your rights if they explain them at all. You're on hold for 40+ minutes each call and have to call back often. This in itself is so obstructive. People receiving payments from centrelink are often not in the position or headspace to be on hold for hours at a time only to be given the advice 'just provide find your employer from 6 years ago and ask for the payslips'. Completely lost faith in the Government.
